Turquoise bays, kangaroos, and blustery winds—final 5km along Wineglass Bay to the carpark, ending our Freycinet Peninsula adventure.
Wineglass Bay camp to Wineglass Bay carpark | 5km
We rose with the first light on our final day.
With just a short 5km journey ahead, we moved around camp in no hurry, soaking up our last moments in this wildly beautiful coastal landscape.
Breakfast was shared with kangaroos — almost literally. Jane got into a tug-of-war over a bag of scroggin, much to the roo’s delight.
The walk along Wineglass Bay was breathtaking, with turquoise waters lapping at white sands and mountains framing the horizon — the Hazards ahead, Mount Freycinet and Graham towering behind.
The strong winds we’d grown so accustomed to joined us again. Blustery, but invigorating — the kind of wind that makes you feel alive.
Then came the climb — roughly 1,000 steps to the iconic Wineglass Bay Lookout.
Heavy packs strapped to our backs, we picked our way past day walkers heading down to the bay.
At the lookout, a crowd of about 20 had gathered, glancing curiously at our packs. We found a small gap and took it all in — the peninsula stretching before us, turquoise bays, jagged peaks, and wind-lashed ridges.
A perfect, fitting end to our journey.
The final stretch back to our waiting rig was almost comical, gusts nearly carrying us off our feet.
A few laughs, a quick signature in the hiker’s book, and just like that, our Freycinet adventure was done.
